Zero Emissions Rationale

Intrepid Ltd reports zero emissions across several categories, reflecting specific business processes and operational activities that either do not generate emissions or are subject to business restrictions. Below is an outline of the reasons for zero emissions in the relevant categories:

  • Scope 1: Direct Emissions:
Intrepid Ltd operates with no owned or controlled facilities or vehicles that would produce direct emissions, resulting in zero emissions for Scope 1. Our business model relies on office spaces and remote working, eliminating the need for combustion-based equipment or transportation.

  • Scope 3: Various Categories:

    • Category 1 (Purchased Goods and Services) and Category 2 (Capital Goods): As a technology consulting firm, Intrepid does not engage in significant physical production or capital investments, which typically generate emissions.

    • Category 3 (Fuel-and Energy-Related Activities): Energy-related emissions are fully captured under Scope 2, leaving no residual fuel-related emissions.

    • Category 4 and 9 (Upstream/Downstream Transportation and Distribution): Intrepid provides consultancy and digital solutions without product distribution, thus eliminating transportation emissions.

    • Category 5 (Waste): As a service provider, our operations do not produce substantial physical waste.

These restrictions and the nature of our business ensure minimal environmental impact in many areas of operation.

Current Emissions Reporting

1st April 2023 - 31st March 2024

As this is Intrepid Ltd's first time reporting emissions, the current emissions data for the year serves as both the baseline and the initial reporting figures. The total emissions amount to 2.5046 tCO2e, covering Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity and Scope 3 emissions from business travel and employee commuting. Since no prior emissions data exists, these values represent our starting point for tracking and reducing carbon output. Going forward, this baseline will be used to measure our progress as we implement carbon reduction initiatives in line with our Net Zero commitment by 2040.

Emissions reduction targets

Intrepid Ltd is committed to reducing its carbon emissions in line with our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2040. Starting from our baseline emissions of 2.5046 tCO2e, we aim to implement strategic measures to progressively lower our carbon footprint. Our key reduction targets include:

  • Short-term (2025): A 20% reduction in Scope 2 emissions by transitioning to 100% renewable energy for our offices, decreasing emissions from 1.9175 tCO2e to 1.534 tCO2e.

  • Medium-term (2030): A 40% reduction in overall emissions, focusing on Scope 3 emissions from business travel and employee commuting by promoting remote work, sustainable travel options, and virtual collaboration tools.

  • Long-term (2040): Achieve full Net Zero emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 by continuing to adopt energy-efficient practices, offsetting unavoidable emissions, and working closely with suppliers to reduce indirect emissions.

We will review and update these targets based on our 12-month period April - March to ensure continued progress towards Net Zero.

To achieve our Net Zero commitment by 2040, Intrepid Ltd will implement the following carbon reduction initiatives, aligned with the principles of ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and PAS 2060 (Carbon Neutrality):

  1. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (ISO 14001: Energy and Resource Management)
We will reduce our Scope 2 emissions by transitioning to 100% renewable energy sources for our offices by 2025. We will also implement energy-efficient practices, such as optimising heating, cooling, and lighting systems, and conducting regular energy audits to identify further opportunities for improvement.

  2. Sustainable Business Travel (ISO 14001: Environmental Performance Monitoring)
To minimise Scope 3 emissions from business travel, we will adopt a “remote-first” policy where possible and invest in virtual collaboration tools. For necessary travel, we will prioritise low-carbon transportation options, such as rail over air travel, and encourage carpooling or electric vehicle use.

  3. Employee Commuting and Remote Work (ISO 14001: Employee Engagement and Awareness)
We will actively promote remote working and flexible commuting options, reducing emissions from employee commuting. We will provide incentives for employees to use public transport, bicycles, or electric vehicles and work toward reducing commuting emissions by 25% by 2030.

  4. Supply Chain Collaboration (ISO 14001: Life Cycle Perspective, PAS 2060: Stakeholder Engagement)
In line with PAS 2060 requirements, we will engage with key suppliers to assess and reduce carbon emissions in our supply chain. We will prioritise partnerships with suppliers who demonstrate strong sustainability credentials and will work with them to identify emission reduction opportunities.

  5. Waste Reduction and Recycling (ISO 14001: Resource Efficiency)
Although Intrepid Ltd has minimal waste generation, we will implement a zero-waste policy in our offices by promoting recycling, reducing paper use, and encouraging digital documentation. We will also focus on minimising electronic waste through responsible IT hardware procurement and recycling programs.

  6. Ongoing Monitoring and Reporting (ISO 14001: Continual Improvement, PAS 2060: Verification and Documentation)
We will establish a robust carbon monitoring and reporting system to track emissions and progress against reduction targets. Regular audits and performance reviews will ensure continual improvement and compliance with ISO 14001 and PAS 2060 standards.
